MTV Getting Hits From Filming Hits

Growing up a part of Generation Y, or also known as "the Millennials," I have watched television evolve...literally.  The days of the witty batter amongst a group of Friends or the coffee shared over the overly pessimistic conversation with Seinfeld are long gone.  Reality television has taken over and everybody is getting their 15 minutes of fame in. In the center of it all is MTV, who has found reality TV hits such as Teen Mom and Jersey Shore.

Teen Mom

Teen Mom is the spin off show of MTV's 16 & Pregnant, which features soon to be teenage moms and followed them through their struggles of getting pregnant at such a young age.  Teen Mom continues documenting the stories of the young mother's and the issues they face such as struggling to make ends meet and deteriorating relationship with their children's fathers.  At the peak of Teen Mom's season two ratings shot up due controversy between one of the mothers, Amber, and her then fiance Gary.  Amber and Gary's rocky relationship comes to an explosive downfall as MTV filmed an altercation between the two which ended with Amber repeatedly punching Gary in the episode titled, "Lashing Out."

Even though MTV released a statement saying by no means do they support domestic violence, whenever anyone turned on MTV "Lashing Out" was either just on, on, or on after the next show.  When the episode airs, there are no disclaimers about domestic abuse or that violent is not the answer so what kind of message is MTV putting out there for their young audiences.  With a large part of MTV's viewer demographics being pre-teens and teenagers, what is MTV doing to fight the issue of domestic abuse?

MTV's smash hit Jersey Shore follows the lives of "guidos and guidettes" as they party through the summer at the number one hot spot of New Jersey, Seaside Heights.  Bringing in the network's highest ratings ever, the Jersey Shore holds a cast members short tempers and egos bigger than Snooki'e poof.

With their big personalities all contained in a small beach house, things can get quite heated on the Jersey Shore.  Arguments tend to arise after a hard night out at the clubs and drunken tempers seem to arise especially when roommates do not like each other.  There is a mutual disdain between the two cast mates Sammy and Jenny who tend to keep out of each other's way, but when they happen to cross paths this tend to get violent, check out the link below.

Through out the filming of the show varying cast members have hit other cast members and no one is removed from the show.  Is MTV trying fuel for more altercations by keeping aggressive and short-tempered members on the cast? What kind of example is MTV setting for it's young viewers?

I guess we'll just have to sit back and wait to see how bad MTV is going to let it get before it gets better. I just hope nobody has to get seriously injured before that happens.
